Killington Vermont (US)

Killington offers many locations for grabbing a drink in-between runs and at the end of the day. The K-1 Base lodge has a large cafeteria as well as Bar area. It used to have two bar areas but during the floods created by the remnants of Hurricane Irene the end of the lodge and second bar were washed away. Killington replaced them with what is known as the Umbrella bar. Two large umbrellas that house two round bars inside. Usually walled and heated during the cold winter months the umbrellas can close down so that during the sun warming days of spring tanning is possible "inside" as well as out on the deck. During the spring Saturdays they will host bands in the afternoon. Killington just finished rebuilding it’s Peak lodge and also supports a mid mountain watering hole "Vista Deck" in the vain of the European Alps. Bear mountain Base lodge has a smaller cafeteria and bar then the K-1. Snowshed Lodge has a large bar area and usually provides Happy hour entertainment during the weekends.

Night Life:

Few, if any, resorts can rival the night life in Killington. The Wobbly Barn has been voted the best ski bar in the country by various ski magazines, so if going to Killington, a visit to The Wobbly Barn is a must. It's one of the few ski bars where the ratio of women to men were in the favor of the men! This is an endorsement, not a guarantee. The Wobbly Barn is actually a steakhouse serving up both steaks and seafood.

Lookout Bar and Grille: This popular, peanut shell on the floor, Apres ski location is a short drive from the mountain and hard to miss with its distinctive sign. The American cuisine food is good and reasonable but getting a table on Saturday between 4 and 7 may take some time. The horseshoe Bar in the middle of the action is staffed by friendly bartenders serving house specialties Gumba Smashs and Turbos. Happy Hour (3-6pm) offers half priced wings coated in the house special wing sauce, not to be missed, as well as traditional buffalo sauce. If you want a seat at the bar get there early after skiing on Friday or Saturday as the bar does fill up quickly with snow geared skiers and riders fresh from the slopes.

Outback Pizza: This brick oven, wood fired pizza restaurant is a short drive from the mountain. In this spacious building groups come to enjoy the large selection of delicious pizzas that only a wood fired brick oven can provide. The back room is large with a wood stove in the middle and has live entertainment with one of the talented local bands. Outback has a good local beer selection and an innovative method for chilling their pint glasses at the back bar. Also look out the back windows and you may see a unicycle bear riding the high wire. Late night there is a DJ and dance floor.

On the Rocks: If you are looking for a more upscale establishment to eat at On The Rocks offers a more refined atmosphere and menu. Hosting a waterfall in the entrance and it's 30’s gangster themed décor, including an actual Tommy gun mounted over the hearth, the knowledgeable wait staff serve a nice selection of gourmet food and complementing drink.

Mogul's Sports Bar: The Sports Bar is true to form with multiply TV's, a large open floor plan, Arcade games, pool table, and a selection of typical bar food with a side of award winning BBQ sauce. The BBQ food is cooked the big iron smoker outside. If you are in town during the annual Pig Roast it is well worth it.

Pickle Barrel: Know for its club like entertainment feel this wooden two story establishment has a limited menu but is can offer the maximum fun. Open for Happy hour and late night it offers bands local and regional playing favorite covers on the main stage with a DJ mixing popular dance tunes during breaks. The second floor has an overlook of the main dance floor and hosts a second stage called the Crows Nest. Amazingly enough, the first floor main stage sound does not infiltrate the Crows Nest music and more intimate feel. There are 4 main bars two on the first and two on the second floor. Cover charge for Happy hour is usually $5 and a minimum of $20 late night. As a note if you go for happy hour don't expect to be able to avoid the late night cover just by hanging out, The Pickle Barrel closes at 8pm kicking everyone out and reopens at 9pm for late night. It does have an in house pizza oven and they are more then happy to sell you a pie as you leave the bar for the night.

Jax’s: Right next door to the Pickle Barrel it hosts many Arcade games, live entertainment, good bar food and friendly/knowledgeable bartenders. Typically busier on Friday nights as they have one of the more popular regular acts in Jamie and Aarine, Jax's is a meeting place for those coming in to town for the weekend and looking to forget the trip up. Fridays can have a cover of $5. Saturdays are more low key with local entertainment and usually no cover. Make sure to request a pickle back if you go.

The Garlic: Hanging socks of garlic cloves and a mountain of candles welcome you as you enter this popular Italian cuisine establishment. The food is excellent in this low light atmosphere. The bar area offers Tapas as well as the full menu. The Bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable. Great place to share stories from the day on the mountain.

The Foundry: Ice Slaking and Broom ball on the pond in front, with a water wheel on the side of this wooden industrial building houses one of the larger dining rooms, stages and dance floors in the area. American cuisine and live entertainment make this a fun meeting place. The middle of the room has a large bar to take in all the action.

Sushi Oshi: Sushi in Vermont…. Killington has something for everyone. So if you are in the mood break out your chopsticks get a wad of wasabi and dip that raw fish in some soy sauce saddle up to the extensive sushi bar. This well established and very popular dining spot has more than just sushi on the Asian menu and I don’t know of any other place in the area where you can get a scorpion bowl.

The "B" House: One cannot do a review of the night life and not mention the "B" house. And that is where it will end… ask around you might get invited over for after hours.

Off Access Rd:

McGrath's Irish Pub: Rt 4 towards Rutland before Pico ski slope on the right is the Long Trail in which houses McGrath's Irish Pub with an earthy feel from its half log furniture and rocks coming into the space from the floor and walls. The Sheppard's pie is worth writing home about. Usually at night they have Irish music and soccer games on the tele.

Pasta Pot: Taking Rt 4 east from the access road the pasta pot will be on the left. Genuine Italian feel and atmosphere make this a favorite for group dinners without the hassle of the access road.
